Interpreting “Points Won” Percentage

For every match, one of the basic stats that the app provides is the Points Won percentage. Obviously winning more than 50% of the points in a match is good but that doesn’t necessarily guarantee that you win the match. A simple way of interpreting this stat is to use the below chart to determine which zone your Points Won for a particular match falls into.

Points Won Zones

Zone 1 is when the Points Won is less than 37%. Falling in this zone is pretty much a guaranteed loss. If you ever win a match in this zone, assuming the opponent didn’t forfeit, consider it a miracle and please do tell us all about it.

Zone 2 is when the Points Won is between 37% and 45%. Falling in this zone is most often a loss. Although once in a while someone might fall in this range and still win.

Zone 3 is when the Points Won is between 45% and 55%. A lot of matches fall into this region, especially for the Pro’s. In this region either player could win.

Zone 4 is when the Points Won is between 55% and 63%. Falling in this zone is most often a win. Although it is possible to get unlucky and still lose once in a while.

Zone 5 is when the Points Won is above 63%. This is pretty much a guaranteed win, barring any miracles for your opponent.

Zone 3 is most interesting. It is a good indicator of your mental game. If you win the majority of the matches in this zone, you probably have a strong mental game and are winning the critical points. On the other hand, if you are losing most of these matches, this is an opportunity to figure out why and improve. Were you not able to convert on breakpoints? Did you feel nervous on the big points and played too conservatively? Or did you become impatient on the big points and tried to end them quickly and ended up hitting errors? Figure out one thing about your mental game that you can improve and then consistently focus on that.
