Cross-Court Serve And Volley Drill

This drill develops consistency in volleys and serve-volley skills.

1) Player A (blue) starts by serving to Player B (red) on the deuce side. The serve should be a typical second serve and not a difficult to return first serve. If the serve is out, Player A should just take another serve. Winners or errors don’t count during the serve or the return of the serve. Player A has to approach the net immediately after serving and Player B has to approach the net immediately after returning the serve. A shot is out if it lands outside of the red shaded areas in the picture below; the doubles alleys are considered in. The point is over once someone hits a winner or error. First person to 5 points wins (you can also play to 3 or 7 points if you would like.) Every point should be started in the same way.

2) Now play the second game to 5 points (or 3 or 7 point if you would like) with Player A (blue) always serving from the ad-side. A shot is out if it lands outside of the red shaded areas in the picture below.

3) Repeat the first game with roles between Player A and Player B reversed. Therefore now, Player B (red) should serve on the deuce side.

4) Repeat the second game with roles between Player A and Player B reversed. Therefore now, Player B (red) should serve on the ad-side.
